Welcome to BA1002
This is our tutorial blog and it's where most of our interactions will take place during this course. The video below introduces you to the online "hubs" around which our virtual BA classroom is structured - LearnJCU, this blog, and the BA1002 facebook group. The video also introduces some of the staff that will be supporting you throughout the course.
Blogging & Participation
For the first two weeks I'll be creating blog posts (like this one) putting them on this blog and asking you to make comments below. Then from week three, until week 8, you'll be taking control of the blog. You'll be asked to use the lecture materials and readings to create your own blog posts and comment on other student's work. This is the "blog assessment" - worth 20%, (we'll talk about it some more in week 2).
In weeks 9, 10, 11 & 12 I will take over posting again and you'll be asked to make comments and discuss the lectures/posts/readings/assessments. Your comments, on my posts, constitute 10% of your "participation grade" (there are more details on participation grades in your subject outlines).
Week 1 tasks
- View the week 1 lecture (on LearnJCU) and complete the week 1 readings.
- If this is your first semester at uni, make sure you complete the ETC! orientation module
- If you are a continuing student leave three study/surviving university tips below (make sure you enter your name into the "comment as: ..." box).
- Then watch the documentary (linked below) and leave a comment introducing yourself to the class.
Documentary: Connected - How Kevin Bacon Cured Cancer
This film explains "6 degrees of separation" and small worlds theory,
as well as exploring some some of the reasons why we study networks.

ReplyDeleteHi everyone,
ReplyDeleteThis is my second semester of study at JCU. I am doing a Bachelor of Arts (Human Services), with the aim of working in child protection.
I am a single parent with two kids (16 and 5), so my first tip for any new student/s, is to schedule and plan time for not only study, across all your subjects, but for yourself too!
Second tip, is to keep on top of the readings and write a summary of each reading that outlines the gist of the paper, and note key quotes or bits of information (include the page number you got it from), as this makes things so much easier when doing assignments.
And lastly, connect with other external students via email or in person if possible - I found this invaluable last semester. Having someone to talk to about the readings/lecture/assignments really is helpful.
So in a nutshell, be organised and be proactive, and good luck with your studies.
Cheers, Tammy
Hi Tammy & welcome,
ReplyDeleteThese are great tips. Time management is definitely emerging as a theme across the 3 tute groups & I couldn't agree more. Planning your time effectively is sooo important, especially when you're juggling home, work, uni, kids and everything.
Hello,
ReplyDeleteI'm Kimber and I'm 26 and from Brisbane, I was actually born in Townsville though so i'm sure the degrees of separation wouldn't take long to connect.
This is my first semester at Uni. I've spent the last 8 years moving around, living in different cities such as Sydney and Boston. My favourite city, that I miss tremendously, is New York City where i lived for 2 years.
I do believe all of this travelling has brought me to the right place, studying my BA in English Literature. I am studying full time and I work part time at a book shop, which I love.
I look forward to talking with you all, it sounds like this subject will provide us with many interesting discussions.
Hi
DeleteAnd, welcome to the BA :) Sounds like you muct have some pretty amazing adventures :)
A bookshop must be one of the best places to work whilst studying lit. :)
Thanks Rhian, yes the bookshop is perfectly suited :) I have had some interesting adventures over the years and am now looking forward to my uni adventure, which i'm really enjoying so far. Love the content of this course in particular :)
DeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteMy name is Carmen I am studying a Bachelor or Arts and Indigenous Studies and I am a first year student so Im slowly figuring out how to navigate my way around Learn JCU.
I am 27 and live in Mount Isa and I am working part time and studying part time.
I have found the documentary very fascinating and look forward to learning more.
My mum has just finished her PhD in History and has drilled into me to manage my time and stay on top of my work and keep up with my readings.
I look forward to talking with you all and discussing this subject further in the future :-)
Hi Carmen
DeleteWelcome, I guess if you've seen you're mum go through her Phd you've got a pretty good idea of what's coming :)
hope you enjoy the course :)
Hey guys,
ReplyDeleteMy name is Rebecca (but you can call me Bec), I'm studying a double degree of Arts and Science majoring in Anthropology and genetics and genomics. I actually do all my other subjects internally but have decided to take this subject externally due to a lecture clash.
As I'm a first year (straight out of high school) student I'm still figuring out uni myself, but during first semester I worked out some really important things to remember. Whatever you do DON"T GIVE UP, don't get lazy with classes and only give half your attention to a subject, it all gets reflected in your results. Don't get lazy during exam week and study really hard for your first subject, only to slowly taper off (the proofs in the results!). Also, do things at uni your interested in and you will find that its much easier to keep your attention on your subject (whether revising or writing essays).
I'm really looking forward to experiencing this new form of teaching and I can't wait to see how it works :)
Hi Bec
DeleteThat sounds like such an awesome major! I'm anthropology, in tsv. Are you on the Townsville or the Cairns campus?
Hi Rhian,
DeleteI'm on the Townsville campus, really excited about doing the basic anthropology subject at the moment :D
Hello, my name is Sarah. This is my first semester, studying externally from Sydney. I work full-time in Communications for an ASX listed company, and am thankful for all of the tips around time management, I'm sure they will come in handy!
ReplyDeleteI look forward to working through this subject and discussing it with everyone.
Hi Sarah
DeleteWelcome, all the way from Townsville :) One of my favourite things about studying external is the networks we create all across Australia :)
hope you enjoy the BA.
Hi I'm Bayden.
ReplyDeleteI'm studying a BA majoring in Anthropology and Criminology.
My three study tips are:
-Schedule. If you don't plan, things most often don't get done.
-Always ask for help. Never think that you can't ask for help, pretty much everyone at Uni is always happy to help, and they are here for you.
-Read widely. Always try to read a credible newspaper and go online, it always helps to have an open mind and a lot of general knowledge. It is especially important in the BA course as so many of the disciplines have so many varied topics.
Hi Bayden :)
DeleteI can't think of anything else to say apart from please forget the fact that you saw me in 80s fancy dress yesterday :D
Welcome, hope you're still enjoying anthropology :) you could go forensic anthrop. with that major.
Hi everyone, I'm Justin
ReplyDeleteThis will be my first semester of university studying a BA majoring in Enviromental Studies. At present I'm currently working full-time so studying part time. I live in Townsville and have just recently left the Navy after 12 years. I am looking forward to the different challenges university study will no doubt bring and appreciate the study tips.
Hi Justin.
DeleteWelcome, to the BA. It'll be interesting to hear you're thoughts on network theory from an enviro. studies perspective, and I'm guessing discipling yourself to study should come pretty easy after 12 years Navy :)

Hi my name is Jaz, I am a continuing student but haven't studied for a few years. I am studying a bachelor of Arts in Human Services, I want to work in disability services. I live in Cairns and I run a travel desk in town.
ReplyDeleteIn my experience organisation is the key to study. Organisation in how and when you study. Also taking effective notes and time management. I find creating a study schedule is really helpful, especially if you work full time like me. Using your time effectively, doing your readings during your lunch break etc.
It always helps when your interested in what your learning. I think we will have some really interesting discussions in this subject.
Hi everyone,
ReplyDeleteI seem to be a bit behind, I have only just been connected to this page. I am majoring in Human Services and am on my second semester of Uni. Some study tips that I have learnt in this short time is reading the intro and conclusion first to gain insight before reading the body. The tips on ETC for reading really helped. Print out the readings is my second tip, I find it helpful to underline, tag and write notes on the side. I know this can be done in certain computer programs but I am still getting my head around all the new technology. My third tip is to time manage. Give yourself time to eat, sleep, work, cook, clean, study, do assignments, maintain a good relationship with family members etc.
I live in Cooktown and work in the surrounding communities.
