Virtual Networks

The virtual network that I have chosen is a Facebook page called The Mount Isa Vent Page.

Prouty, R, 'A turtle on a lease' (2009) describes a Flaneur and immediately this interested me and gave me the idea of observing from afar, not actively participating and giving me the freedom to travel through this site going un-noticed.

From what I have observed of this network, the administration team are the people who hold the power to control the content. They have a list of rules that members must follow: such as no racism, members must be over the age of eighteen to joint and no mentioning of a business name or individual can be included in a 'vent'. The administration team have the power to remove a 'vent' or a member quickly if it is deemed necessary.

When reflecting on the idea of the Mercator and Peters Maps, it is clear that both maps reflect different views of the world. Neither view appears wrong or right, just differing. I refer you to the following hyperlink: http://www.petersmap.com/page2.html

When I read posts from members and examining responses, I can see each individual has a strong opinion and that neither is wrong despite each arguing that the other is wrong.

I find it very amusing reading each comment from each member. Remaining un-noticed, I have a freedom to travel through this network observing the discussions. This is different to a real life dispute where, if this occurred between two people on the street I would walk past them and pretend I did not notice giving them both their privacy. Whereas, in the Cyber world I can watch and observe without feeling uncomfortable or getting involved.
